steamer dome trunk Circa 1856

By angimosity, 30 November, 2010
Description

This steamer trunk has a dome top, circa 1856, was a steal at $45 at a local garage sale. According to the seller, the trunk started it's trip at France came all the way over to America and landed at New England. From there, it ended up in Portland as a gift from great aunt to nephew. The reason behind selling this piece was simply stated as " We are trying to down size". All of the metal pieces are intact, the leather straps (making this a traveling trunk) are intact. There is no key to the lock, and the original tanned leather with floral print is untouched and in good condition. Has not been refinished, as I am hesitant to devalue the price.

If anyone can help identify the hallmark (last picture) to help identify who made the trunk, that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: steamer dome trunk Circa 1856

A certain amount of the value of a trunk comes from condition.  Having original handles and fittings is great (replacements are available but tricky to get on). Having original lining is nice (if not too dirty)   Also there is a tray that they came with.  It's more valuable if it has the original tray, also with the lining. That said, what you paid is about where these sell these days at auction.
