Re: secretary or desk
I'll be frank- I've never seen a desk quite like this. It most closely resembles a secrétaire à abattant, but without the lower drawers and having the addition of these two unusual side cupboards. Very peculiar.
The wood appears to be walnut, but without closer inspection I can't be sure of the type, or whether its solid or a veneer. The style is almost certainly Aesthetic Movement, placing it neatly in the late 19th century, from about 1870 - 1900. Most likely either English or American in make.
Unfortunately, I simply can't give you a price because I can't find anything even remotely similar. A much smaller and visually very different ladie's secretaire in the Aesthetic Movement style sold at auction for around $525. I suspect this could go for much more, but without knowing more details (maker, wood type and quality, provenance) I really could not say. I highly reccomend that you aquire the services of a high-end auction house in selling this piece
