Art Deco Aquarium

By junktrunky, 5 December, 2024
Description

I found this glass aquarium with gilded corners at an estate sale. I am wondering if anyone could help me find others like it, or tell me who made it and when. I’m also curious as to an appraisal.

Thanks!

Jared

Art Deco Aquarium

Appraisal Report

Item Description

  • Category: Art Deco and Art Nouveau
  • Medium: Glass and brass
  • Distinguishing Marks:
    • Gilded brass figures of mermaids standing on fish heads as corner supports.
    • No manufacturer markings or labels.
    • Plexiglass lid (not original).
  • Condition: Good (visible patina and wear on brass; plexiglass replacement affects authenticity but retains functionality).
  • Dimensions: 30 x 12 x 12 inches
  • Weight: Approximately 25 lbs
  • Date Period: Likely 1930s (based on Art Deco design characteristics).

Historical Context

This aquarium reflects Art Deco style, characterized by its geometric designs, streamlined forms, and decorative embellishments. The mermaid figures, stylized fish heads, and gilded brass align with the Art Deco fascination with mythological and aquatic motifs during the early 20th century.

Aquariums with such elaborate designs were luxury items typically commissioned or produced in limited quantities, catering to affluent households. While no maker is identified, such pieces were commonly crafted by skilled artisans in Europe or America.

Market Trends

  • Art Deco Aquariums: Rare, particularly ones with decorative metalwork. They appeal to collectors of Art Deco furniture and decor.
  • Condition Impact: The replacement plexiglass lid slightly diminishes value, but the intact decorative brass and good overall condition maintain its desirability.
  • Comparable Sales: Similar decorative Art Deco furniture and accent pieces (aquariums, end tables) with elaborate brass or bronze accents sell for $500–$1,200, depending on provenance and condition.

Current Value

  • Estimated Retail Value: $800–$1,000
  • Auction Value (Realized): $500–$800
  • Private Sale Value: $600–$900

Recommendations

  1. Authentication: Research further to determine the maker, possibly by consulting antique dealers specializing in Art Deco furniture.
  2. Conservation: Consider replacing the plexiglass lid with a glass one to restore authenticity and improve value.
  3. Display: Emphasize the rarity and craftsmanship in any future display or resale listing.

This is definitely a very unique item and I don’t come across these often. Let me know if you'd like guidance on restoration or further identification.
