Re: Paul Jones 1917 Unopened Whiskey Bottle

I contacted a professional who speficially specializes in fine (antique) wines and spirits. He felt $500 would be the absolute top dollar price range for a bottle like this is and if you are offered that or more you should take the money and run as he put it.

Thanks for sharing

Provenance

The item was found in 1984 in an abandoned house in Boone, NC, by the current owner's father. The house had been abandoned for over 40 years, and the property owner granted permission to take any discovered items. This bottle, along with other artifacts, was recovered during the search. The bottle has since been well-preserved in its original packaging.

Historical Significance

This whiskey bottle is an excellent example of Prohibition-era artifacts. Medicinal whiskey was among the few legal alcohol products during Prohibition (1920–1933) in the United States. Distributed in 1934, shortly after the repeal of Prohibition, it provides a glimpse into a unique period of American history. The Paul Jones brand, associated with high-quality whiskey, was produced by the Frankfort Distillery and marketed for medicinal purposes, adding to its historical and collectible appeal.

Condition Assessment

  • Bottle: Excellent condition; unopened with intact seals.
  • Box: Minor wear, including peeling foil and a small tear, but structurally intact and complete.

The excellent preservation of both the bottle and box enhances the overall value of this item.

Market Analysis

Prohibition-era medicinal whiskey bottles, especially in their original unopened condition, are highly collectible. The Paul Jones brand, distributed by the prominent Frankfort Distillery, holds particular appeal for collectors of antique spirits and Prohibition memorabilia.

Similar items in comparable condition have been sold in auctions and collector markets, with values influenced by:

  • Brand recognition
  • Provenance
  • Overall condition (both the bottle and packaging)
  • Rarity and desirability among collectors.

Appraised Value

Based on the condition, historical significance, and comparable sales of similar Prohibition-era whiskey bottles:

  • Estimated Value: $500–$700
    • Higher values are achievable in specialized auctions targeting antique spirits collectors.

Conclusion

This Paul Jones 1917 whiskey bottle is a well-preserved example of Prohibition-era memorabilia with strong appeal to collectors of antique spirits. The combination of its unopened state, original packaging, and historical provenance enhances its value, making it a desirable collectible in the current market. Proper storage (away from heat and direct sunlight) will help preserve its condition and long-term value.

If you decide to sell, online auction platforms like eBay or specialty auction houses dealing with antique spirits are recommended for maximizing its value.
