One-Eyed Cowboy and Horse Ceramic (1949)

Item Description:
This ceramic sculpture depicts a cowboy with one eye riding a one-eyed horse (opposite eyes). The piece is marked with a symbol resembling an @ sign (or a circle with a "C" and an "O") followed by "1949." The figurine measures approximately 11 inches tall and 10 inches wide, with a weight of 3 pounds 14 ounces. The condition appears good, with no significant visible damage.

Historical Context and Possible Origins:

  • Era: The 1949 marking suggests it was made in the mid-20th century, possibly during the post-war period when whimsical and cartoonish ceramics became popular.
  • Style & Design: The exaggerated features (like the expressive horse and cowboy details) are reminiscent of mid-century novelty ceramics, often seen in Western-themed home decor or giftware.
  • Marking Analysis: The symbol resembling a circle with a "C" and an "O" could indicate a maker's mark. This might point toward a lesser-known studio or a regional pottery house from the 1940s. The design could be linked to Western-themed pop culture trends, which were very popular in post-WWII America.

Condition Analysis:

  • Surface Condition: The ceramic glaze appears well-preserved with minor signs of wear.
  • Structural Integrity: No major cracks or chips are visible, which is crucial for maintaining value.

Estimated Value:

Based on the unique design, vintage Western theme, and its 1949 date, this piece is collectible, particularly for enthusiasts of vintage Americana, Western decor, or mid-century ceramics. Similar novelty ceramics from this period often range in value from $75 to $200.

The exact value may fluctuate depending on:

  • Rarity (if this is part of a limited run or by a recognized ceramic maker).
  • Provenance (if tied to a well-known artist or pop culture reference).
  • Market demand for Western-themed vintage decor.

Recommendation for Further Steps:

  1. Research the Maker’s Mark: Identifying the mark with more precision may reveal a well-known ceramic artist or manufacturer, which could increase the value significantly.
  2. Consult a Specialist: A professional appraiser or collector familiar with mid-century American ceramics may provide deeper insights.
  3. Condition Preservation: Consider gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and avoid harsh chemicals to preserve the glaze.

If you plan to sell, platforms such as eBay, Etsy (for vintage decor), or specialty Western/nostalgia collectors' groups could be ideal for reaching interested buyers.
