Antique vs Vintage: What's the Difference?
Understanding the distinction between antique and vintage items, and why it matters for collectors, sellers, and appraisals.
The Basic Definitions
While the terms "antique" and "vintage" are often used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings in the collecting and appraisal world.
Antique
Generally defined as items 100 years old or older. This definition is widely accepted by customs agencies, auction houses, and professional appraisers. Antiques often reflect craftsmanship, materials, and styles that are no longer commonly produced.
Vintage
Typically refers to items 20 to 99 years old. Vintage items represent a particular era's style and design aesthetic. The term is especially common for clothing, accessories, and mid-century modern furniture.
Why the Distinction Matters
For Collectors
Many collectors specialize in specific eras. Understanding whether an item is truly antique or vintage helps you target the right audience when buying or selling.
For Appraisals
Age impacts value differently across categories. Some antiques command premiums simply for surviving a century, while some vintage items are highly sought after for their design despite being "only" 50 years old.
For Customs and Import
True antiques (100+ years) often qualify for duty-free import in many countries. Documentation of age can save significant money on international purchases.
What About "Retro"?
Retro typically describes items that are either newer reproductions made to look like earlier styles, or items from the recent past (roughly 20-40 years ago) that evoke nostalgia for that era.
A new chair made to look mid-century is "retro." A 1960s original is "vintage." Knowing the difference is crucial for accurate pricing.
