1 Hinged case that opens to reveal the dial — hunter cases have a front cover, open-face cases do not
2 Crown and pendant at the 12 o'clock position (American) or 3 o'clock position (European lever-set)
3 Engraved or engine-turned case back, often with monograms or presentation inscriptions
4 Visible jewels (tiny red ruby bearings) through the case back on higher-grade movements
5 White porcelain dial with hand-painted or printed numerals — cracks in the enamel are called "hairlines"
6 Separate serial numbers on the case and the movement (they are independently manufactured)

Tip 1

The movement serial number — not the case serial number — is what identifies the watch. Open the case back and look for the serial number engraved on the movement plate, then look it up in a serial number database

Tip 2

Test gold cases with a magnet: gold is non-magnetic. Gold-filled cases have a thin gold layer over base metal — look for wear-through spots on the edges
