Matthews Brothers Furniture

Long Description

This bureau was purchased in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1989 for $325. It was at the estate sale held at the home we were purchasing, and has traveled with us to 2 more houses over the last 34 years. One of the wheels on the bureau is off, but we still have the wheel. The marble is intact, with a slight chunk off the underside of the rear corner, hardly visible if looking at it from the top. We have always used it as a bureau to hold paperwork, photos, and the like. When I moved it last, I removed the marble top and noticed the Matthews Brothers stamp you’ll see in the pictures. I have done research on the history of the company, so I know about when and where it originated. We are now looking to sell this piece and would like to get an idea of it’s worth.

Pieces like this generally…

Pieces like this generally date from the last quarter of the 19th Century. They were a hot item up to the early 1990's , but values for Eastlake furniture along with other Victorian styled furniture has been in decline since then. We see comparable example at auction often now selling in the 100-200 range.
