Walnut with applied walnut carving and walnut burl decoration; massive frame, very high headboard with three rounded molded arches, burl inlay and applied carved fleur-de-lis type decoration, square end posts with turned ball finials; horizontal footboard with walnut burl panels and applied decoration like the headboard, very large rounded posts either side, turned top of posts unscrew revealing hollow area inside, wide legs rest on wooden discs, wheels can be attached to base of legs for movement; head and foot have side projections which slope down to wide carved side rails; original finish in excellent condition. Transition piece between the late Empire style and early Victorian Renaissance Revival style; circa 1855.
