Description
I have 3 of these ladder back hand carved chairs. They appear to have a rush seat. I am not sure of the type of wood used, possibly maple. I am trying to sell these and need more info. Thank you

These look like the chairs made by Shadrick "Birdie" Mace(1892-1973) in Mars Hill NC. Probably maple posts and hickory slats and rungs. Most likely a corn husk seat woven by the women of the family. Many chairs like this were sold out of the Highland Handicraft Guild in Ashville NC. Max Woody of McDowel county NC also made chairs that look like this but dont have the strong chamfering in the slats. See Jerry Israel's article on" the Mace Family of Chair Makers" in May We All Remember Well Vol. 1 Ed. by Robert Brunk.
