This is a patent and patent application for a rectangular file with different faces designed to facilitate sharpening crosscut saws. Crosscut saws have been around since ancient times, but sharpening the raker teeth had always been problematic as traditional angular files cut into the teeth eventually causing them to break. This file was developed in 1925 to extend the life and utility of crosscut saws.
Ironically, one year later (1926) an electrical chainsaw was patented for bucking, and a year after that (1927) the gasoline powered chainsaw began mass production. Although the chainsaw has replaced the crosscut saw for virtually all commercial uses, the crosscut saw remains popular for competitions and for use in areas where engine-driven saws are not permitted or wanted.
