I have an antique door with an etched glass window of the USS Maine. From other sources, I have learned this is part of what was called 'Dewey Mania'. There are approximately 6 windows known to exist. I am not sure if any other doors with this window exist. It is possible it came from a company called M. A. Disbrow & Company located in Omaha, Nebraska. These were distributed in the late 1800's - very early 1900's.
The window is in excellent condition, no scratches or chips. The door shows normal wear and tear but I still consider it to be in good shape. The side facing out is weathered with aged white paint across the top and mostly bare grayish wood on the bottem. The inside has been painted with a chocolat colored paint.
The door is very ornate with 16 small half spindles across the top, encased in molding. The window is encased with very nice molding. There are 2 rows of 3 each raised panels directly under the window and 2 horizontal panels at the bottem of the door.
Re: 1898 Rare Etched Glass Window in Door Uss Maine
A really neat looking door. But I think the Maine is the real attraction. Seems to be pretty rare. My folks have one that is what I believe to be made by the same people. A little different design, but similar to one on skipjack. Just wondering if you got it sold yet? Amazing something like this could last over a hundred years..
