Salesmans Sample table chest?

Description

I am not quite certain what this is or what exactly to call it.  It was described to be a salemans sample chest at the auction I purchased it from.  It is quite old and measures 8-1/2" wide, 9-1/4" tall and is 4-1/4" deep.  The lid/seat opens to reveal a chest.  The lid can be locked and the skeleton key is included.  The lid has brass hinges.  As you can see, the exterior is quite ornate with different inlaid designs.  The chest has four feet two of which are intricately carved four toe animal feet.  The wood appears to be walnut~  Any information as to what this is and its value would be appreciated~
