Description

16" possibly German wooden doll with full-motion joints at neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.  Painted brown eyes, pink lips and open mouth with 6 teeth showing.  Excellent condition with all fingers and toes.  Has jointed bear and small Bible but I don't know if these are original to doll.  Small Gold satin bow in hair. Stamped at upper back between shoulder blades and two partial lines of print can be made out.  Top line says PAT.JAN. and then some numbers that I can't make out.  Bottom line says FOREIGN COUNTRIES.  At right side under these lines appears to be some initials which could be HF, AF, HA or HF with an X under these.  Edges of stamp appear to be a square or rectangle shape.  Doll has raised bumps above and in front of both ears and three across lower back.  Two small holes in soles of feet.

History Grandmother's doll. Clothes handmade in the 70"s by a lady who thought this was a German doll from the late 1800's. Grandmother died when I was young - I don't know anymore.

The head reminds me very much of an Armand Marseille doll.  However, the art work of the eyes look to be retouched.  What kind of head does this doll have?  Check the markings on the back of the head.  You should find anything from 370 to 390.  Hope this helps a little.

The head is wood and the only markings are tool marks on the top back of the head.  Looks like what a rasp might make.  The wig is attached well - possibly glued - should I try to remove it?

Was able to see all of head except crown when I pulled wig up.  No numbers, only those tool (?) marks.  Flesh colored paint extends up to the very crown with a silver dollar sized area unpainted. This is where the wig is glued.  The impression stamped on the upper back is partially what is on a Schoenhut doll stamp.  Did other makers have stamps with PAT.JAN. and FOREIGN COUNTRIES in them?
