Clawfoot table and chairs

By jvanburen, 24 February, 2013
Description

This table and chairs has been in my family for years, passed down from my great grandmother. The table has 6 leaves, giving it the capacity to seat 25 people. I have found tables and chairs online similiar, but nothing near as intricate. I was told that is is late 1800's english, but cant be sure. I have searched for a makers mark, but the only thing I can find is a stamp that reads "354" in multiple places under the table. I am not sure if it is oak or mahogany. The table is missing 3 of its casters, and the chairs are missing a few as well. The casters are glass. The table has never been refinished, and is in really beautiful condition. The only thing that is not original is the upholstery on the chairs. Hoping to get more information, value?

Re: Clawfoot table and chairs

It's what's loosely called Jacobean Revival, most of it is a mix of early English styles, which makes it look far older than it really is. Most of it dates from the turn of the 19th century through to the 1930's. Values for furniture like this peaked in the 1990's, but has taken a nose dive since then. At auction this set would go for about $1500.00.
