I found this between tree roots in our yard where the soil had washed away. It's approximately 6 1/4" long, made of some type metal.
We live in an area of Kentucky (SouthWest Louisville) that had several Civil War encampments and forts nearby. I've also found a bullet from the Civil War in the yard.
Would like to know what this is. The main body of piece looks like it made have swiveled with a possible spring inside. Circular portion is 1 1/4" wide and looks like it made have moved freely back and forth in other section.
At first, I thought it may have been part of a gun/rifle, but not sure. Perhaps it was some sort of tool or piece off a cannon? Have no clue! Can you help identify?
