I have a large Apsit Bros. of California statue that is of a large Indian head with full headdress. It is a painted plaster cast item. It is about 24 inches in height, 11 inches in width and 9 inches in depth. It weighs 10 pounds. I have done some research and know what it is, my question is about an inscription on the back. It not only has the stamped Apsit Bros. Of California, the copyright symbol and the date (illegible), but it also has the word "MEXICO" etched deeply into the plaster underneath.
Could someone advise what this extra etched word "MEXICO" might mean? Possibly that it was painted by someone in Mexico and they just wanted their country acknowledged. Curious about the original value and the present value with this extra word etched into the back. Both the normal stamp and the etched word are beneath the paint. I found one exactly like it on eBay for 60 bucks, but it is painted poorly and is very plain and is nothing like the elaborate, striking one that I have.It is truly beautiful and the painter was very talented. I found another internet site that valued it at over 300 dollars.
