21 stamped on the inside of the lid edge and on the rim top inside of the box, gold in color and heavy with what seems to be catholic like designs around the box.

I'm going to take a stab and say that this is a contemporary mass reproduction of an older, Victorian piece. The style, by the by, is called Gothic Revival. Its probably made of brass, the 21's are probably product serial numbers to help keep parts together during assembly.

In terms of dollars, its probably worth a couple of tens of dollars. My advice is to keep it- it looks neat, new or not!
