This is what's called a "Wardrobe Trunk", a type of large Steamer Trunk used from the 1920's through 40's for Ship travel. Values for them vary by size and condition. They tend to be used now a Decorator items , as coffee or end tables. What you paid was a good deal, they often go for more than that even at auction. We'd retail one like this for about $275.00.
