This piece actually dates well after 1840, the EPNS marking stands for "Electroplated Nickle Silver". It's called an 'Epergnes' used as a centerpiece on large Victorian dining tables. Most like this date from the last quarter of the 19th century ,1875-1900.

The market for Victorian items like this has crashed since the late 1990's, comparable examples now sell at auction for under $200.00.
