Antique bench

Description

Hi, Some friends of the family passed away and left my family their furniture several years ago. They were from France and mostly owned antiques. I'm curious about this bench. It's quite heavy and solid, maybe 50 pounds. It's an entrance bench (or at least that's how it's been used). There's a compartment to keep things in the seat. The wood is stained a dark colour, except underneath.

A number is scrawled on the bottom, along with a printed number... so it can't be that old.

I absolutly have no clue when or where they may have gotten it, what kind of wood it is, or what it may be worth.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.
