Description

This miniature portrait belonged to my grandmother who was born and raised in Pretoria South Africa, settled in Calgary, Canada and retired in Grants Pass, Oregon.

I believe this painting is a Jean Babtiste Isabey forgery, based on my research and the signature, which appears to be poorly "scratched" over the right shoulder.

The frame of the painting is made of what appears to me as a cheap metal. I also suspect the "jewels" on the frame are glass.

Medium From what I can tell, I think the painting is on a canvas that is adhered to cardboard. The frame is made of metal. The tines that hold the painting in place are bendable.

Distinguishing marks signature is "n. Isabey" over the right shoulder. Based on my research, this signature is a classic forgery.

Size and dimensions of this item Oval - exterior frame is 3"x3.75"; glass is curved; painting is oval 2 5/8" x 3 3/16"

Date Period My grandmother had this for as long as I can remember, so she acquired it prior to 1960, most likely when she still lived in Pretoria, South Africa.
