Burleigh Ware Willow Pattern

By jb@2057, 17 October, 2024
Description

Burleigh Ware, willow pattern.

Several pieces of these, but not just blue and white, all have other colours - yellow, red, green.

I cannot find any photos or information about these, so no idea if they are rare or worthless.

Burleigh Ware

Blue Willow is a very popular pattern so these definitely have value! Would you be so kind to provide additional information about what you have? (Types of plates, bowls, cups and saucers, any serving pieces like coffee/tea pots, platters, etc. Measurements and number of types would be nice.) Photos of the different colored items would be helpful, too.

Burleigh Ware Willow Pattern Tableware

Description

This collection consists of several pieces of Burleigh Ware pottery in the Willow pattern. While most Willow patterns are traditionally blue and white, these items include additional colors such as yellow, red, and green, which is uncommon for this design.

Category

  • Ceramics and Porcelains
  • Pottery Tableware

Specifications

  • Condition: Good (visible wear but no major chips or cracks)
  • Material: Glazed pottery
  • Design: Willow pattern with multicolor accents
  • Distinguishing Marks:
    • "Burleigh Ware"
    • "Willow"
    • "Burslem, England"
  • Date Period: Likely from the 1920s, based on the marks and style.
  • Sizes: Various tableware pieces.

Historical Significance

Burleigh Ware, manufactured in Burslem, England, is known for producing high-quality pottery with distinctive designs. The Willow pattern originates from a Chinese-inspired motif introduced in the late 18th century and became popular in English ceramics. Traditional Willow patterns are blue and white; the addition of colors such as yellow, red, and greenmakes this collection unique and potentially more collectible.

Condition Assessment

The pieces are in good condition, with minor wear consistent with their age. There are no visible chips, cracks, or significant damage that would detract from their value. The multicolor accents are vibrant and well-preserved, adding to the aesthetic appeal and rarity of the items.

Market Analysis

The market for Willow pattern tableware is robust, especially for unique variations like multicolor designs. Collectors and enthusiasts often seek out unusual patterns or limited-production items. Burleigh Ware pieces are particularly valued for their craftsmanship and historical connection to Burslem, the "Mother Town of the Potteries."

Comparable pieces:

  • Traditional blue-and-white Willow pattern pieces typically sell for $20–$50 per piece, depending on size and condition.
  • Multicolor variations are rarer and can command higher prices, particularly for complete sets or larger pieces.

Appraised Value

Based on the condition, historical significance, and rarity of the multicolor Willow pattern, the estimated value of this collection is:

  • Individual pieces: $40–$80 each
  • Complete set (if applicable): $300–$600

Conclusion

This Burleigh Ware Willow pattern collection is a unique and attractive example of 20th-century English pottery. Its multicolor accents distinguish it from more common Willow designs, enhancing its appeal to collectors. Proper care, including keeping it away from direct sunlight and handling it minimally, will help preserve its value.

If you choose to sell, consider specialized antique marketplaces, online auction platforms, or local appraisers specializing in ceramics to reach the right audience.
