Martha Washington Sewing Cabinet

Description

Looks like it has been "refinished?" at some time, has darker slap marks under the lid and other signs that it has been "repaired", small wood pulls look like they are appropriate, but screws holding them are definitely not. One leg is wobbly and another has a small screw run through it apparently to tighten it to the frame. Legs are turned, no fluting, and attached separately, not part of the frame. The exposed hinges look to be attached with the original slotted screws, no tool marks. The dovetails show the tiniest kerf marks where the corners look like it was run just a hair past. But if they are truly hand cut, it was by a true craftsman. The overall finish is good, some minor scratches and shows alligatoring in a few places. It looks like all mahogany, no secondary woods or veneers that I can find. It is extremely dark, almost black, except the insides of the drawers, which are gorgeous. Top drawer needs the back of the box rebuilt. Second drawer looks to be missing a tray of some sort? Would love to know what the slotted pieces held. It has simple wooden pin drawer stops. The only mark on it is the number 712 hand written on the bottom. I haven't done anything to it, yet. Want to be sure what I've got and then figure out how to proceed. I know it needs a good cleaning and hoping an airing will help. It seems to have been used as a jewelry box / vanity, has absorbed a heavy perfume smell. Happy to answer any other questions, just not sure what else to check.
