Description
This cane rocker is wood and when I got it back in the early 1970's I had it re-caned. I would love to know what period it is from and how much it might be worth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am older now and I am trying to put a date and history with my treasured pieces for my family after I am gone.
Your rocker is a Victorian
Your rocker is a Victorian piece, often referred to as a "Nursing Rocker", the low seat allowing for mother's to breast feed babies. Most like this one date from the third quarter of the 19th Century, made in small factories tht began to appear in the 1840's all over Northeastern USA and Canada. Walnut being the most favored wood used, but examples were also made in cherry and maple. Most today sell for less than $225.00.
