Pottery Bowls

Description These two bowls are hand made pottery with a mark of Miri or Yiri.  I don't exactly know whether that first letter is an M or Y.  Would like to know if they are African in nature or what exactly.  They stand approsimately 2 3/4 inches tall and are 7 inches across.  They are painted and I think they are hand painted.  The background color of the white on one of them was not complete.  The bowl looks like the paint is wearing off but it just seems like it wasn't completely painted for some reason.  Would like to know anything about them that you might know.

I just bought a piece with the same signature, although it's a very different style. Looks more like California studio pottery. I can't post images in a comment, but I bought it  this morning at an estate sale in Kensington, CA, and was told that it was a student of the person who owned the house.  I'm curious where you found yours.
