Every meerschauvm pipe should have mark or initials somewhere. There are 2 types of meerschaum, one is carved out of full pc. of meerschaum, the other is pc.s pressed together and hen carved, making sure no meerschau m is waisted. It starts like coral ,only in one mideastern sea, then dried, baked,etc..Sev.processes before carving. It is only known to come from one tplace in the world, therfore it is unique and rare. Some pc.s are quite exquisite and expensive. The meerschaum "stone", changes it's color, the more it is handled and smoked. Beautiful natural aging process. I have Sev.and have collected them for over 20 yrs. The pressed meerschaum is less exp.than the full.
