If anyone can give me any idea's about the history or potienal value for the sale of this item, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is hard to say exactly, at least without close-ups of the material used, but this appears to be what is called a "simple coiled raffia basket," of a vintage age, probably 1960s- 70s. While the decoration might seem to imply a Mexican or Peruvian origin, most baskets of raffia grass are made in places like Afghanistan and Uganda. Vintage pieces tend to be priced between $10 and $35. To see how they are made, or to check on a far, (far) more exact opinion of age, style, and value, by real basket fanatics, I would check with the good folk over at Basket World, on Flickr.com. You might double your chance for a fast buyer that way, as well. (I'd post the URL, but the darn thing is LONG!)
