Humidor??

Description My Mother inherited it from her Grandparents. She gave it to me recently and says she thinks it is a humidor. On the front of it are strips of what it appears to be masking tape. It is dried on so I decided not to remove it. I would really like to know what it is and what it is used for, it's origin and even just a rough estimate of it's value would be wonderful. Thank You!
