Accurate Description of Item
One Japanese Dragonware Sake Tea Set, marked "Occupied Japan"
Appraiser Remarks
This set is actually Japanese pottery of a type that’s referred to as “Dragon ware”. Dragon ware is the term used to describe porcelain or pottery items with a raised decoration which depicts an Oriental dragon or other mythical creatures. These items were produced in Japan from the end of the 1890’s until the mid 1950’s. Most Dragon ware pieces are decorated with moriage, which is a type of slip clay that gives the piece a three dimensional appearance. Quality varies considerably for these pieces, with the earlier examples generally being a better quality than the 1950’s examples, but because of the large numbers of these sets
produced values remain modest for them.
The "Occupied Japan" marking indicates this set was made after World War Two. This marking was used on Japanese goods made during the American occupation of Japan after World War II, from 1947 to 1952. Values for Dragonware are currently quite modest, especially if there is any damage .
