Antique crucifix.Very old crucifix under glass. So much detail on this piece. There is the cock that crowed, fulfilling Jesus' prophecy that Peter would deny Him three times. There are crossed swords - I'm not sure about that except possibly representing the sword that cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. Also, it may signify 'If you live by the sword, you die by the sword'. There is a smiling skull over crossbones. A lantern hands from one end of the cross may represent Jesus being the Light of the World. On the other side hangs the whip that Jesus was flogged with. There is a robe and dice that were cast for his clothes. The cup and pitcher on top of the cross would most likely be symbolic of the last supper. Behind the cross are the tools used during the crucifixion - the ladder to hang the sign 'The King of the Jews', a hammer and *pliers?* to nail Him to the cross, a stick with a sponge dipped in vinegar, and the spear that pierced Jesus' side. And all on top of hill that is called Calvary. It is made of a soft, gold-colored metal, which is in very good condition. The only issue worth mentioning is a couple of scratches. Base is a black painted wood with a red velvet-like filling in the groove w the dome is set into. The dome is in great condition. You can tell that it's old because of the waves/'dents'/elongated bubbles in the glass. There are a few tiny chips at the very bottom of the glass w it sets down on. The entire metal piece measures 9 1/4" tall. On base with dome measures about 11 1/4" tall.
