When I received the desk, it was in very poor condition. It had been water damaged, many of its joints had been separated /stressed, most of the drawers didn't work properly, and its finish was far from an eye sore. The original finish was something dark and brown which completly covered the wood grain beneath. I completely stripped the old finish but left marks and dents in the wood to preserve the desk's character. I believe that the wood I discovered under the old finish is maple with the exemption of the 3 top drawer fronts. These I think are mahogany and are also different in that the faces are barreled or rounded. The desktop inlay is what looks to be curly maple with a "polished leather look" brown finish which almost completely hides the wood grain. I then rendered the lil ole spirit structurally sound (rejoined separated joints + replicated and replaced missing components). Finally I applied several rubbed in coats of tung oil and buffed it out to enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain which was hidden away so long.
