Description

1955-1965 era Saginaw Furniture (666 Lake Shore Drive, Chicago) buffet/bar in good condition.  Interior - doors have 3 shelves each, and there is one interior full-width shelf.  I believe that the wood is mahogany,  The brass hardware (piano hinges) are in excellent condition but were removed for polishing in the attached photos.  The original door pulls are in excellent but do not appear to be brass, though they are similar in color.

The bar top slides and folds open to double the amount of available space, with a solid black laminate surface.

The casters are in excellent condition and the whole piece is very easy to move around.

It is perfect for entertaining, which is what we intend to use it for this holiday season.  However, we plan to refinish it in black lacquer if it is not of much value on the antique market.

We have been unable to find a similar piece, so we think that it might be unique.  Other Saginaw pieces appear to have a very wide range of values, apparently based on condition, uniqueness, and geographic location.  We are looking for a rough estimate to tell us if it is worth selling on the antique market or if we should just go ahead and refinish it to fit our decor.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Dan C.

History I believe that my parents purchased this item new in Fort Wayne, IN, around 1963. However, it is possible that it was given to them by family before then. It was in our house for nearly 40 years until the house was sold, at which time I put it in storage. It was in my lake house near Bloomington for 5 years and is now in the garage awaiting sale or refinishing.

I have this same bar at home. It belonged to my great uncle and my dad inherited it. Mine has a drawer inside. it looks like yours used to from the pictures.

I have not had much luck finding anything like it. I am also trying to sell mine.

My fiancée and I purchased one like this in perfect condition from a local antique store. It has a built in drawer inside and came with the original key for the lock. We paid $300 and use it for spices, since we both cook quite a lot and collect spices. We were just talking about looking for a second one to put back to back with the one we have and create and 'island'. What were you selling yours for?
