The painting I would like appraised was left to me by my grandfather after he passed in 2011. I simply have not had the time to research it's value and would appreciate any possible help. Speaking honestly, while I like it, my wife hates the picture and would like me to sell it as soon as possible.
The painting itself is of an old galleon sailing on the open sea. It is an oil painting and, unusually for its age, was completed on black velvet. It is quite large at 3ft by 5ft and the frame is in great condition. My relatives have told me that my grandfather bought the painting as an investment some 55 to 60 years ago after receiving a very generous bonus from his boss one year. He paid $5,000 for it, which was quite an investment at the time.
The fact that it was painted on black velvet makes me somewhat skeptical right away but the frame itself I believe has some value if not the painting. The author's name in the corner is not 100% clear but I believe it says "Waller".
Any help would be a blessing. Thanks in advance1
