There is a lot of fake ivory out there made out of faux Ivory resin that looks very convincing . You can test for genuine ivory with a red hot needle, just heat the needle and touch the underside of the base, if it's ivory it will not melt, if it is some kind of resin it will give off a foul plastic smell.
