Very cool, I would agree that it is most likely a ballot box. Any family history about where it may have come from or what era? If not, some close ups of the hardware may help date it..
Thank you so much for your post. I am sorry I don't have much useful information. I believe it is from Europe. When my grandfather was a young man he traveled to Europe to attend college. On his return he purchased a lot of antiques. My mother told me he bought items that were over $500 (?) so they would be duty-free. Not 100% sure about that but that is the story I was told. I have posted some more (close-up) pics.
Well I can't say for sure how old it is or what it's worth, as I haven't seen any comparables, but it's definitely old. The hardware all seems to be hand riveted in place and the chain appears to be handmade as well which seems to indicate considerable age. I would suggest contacting your local museum, they may have someone who can shed some more light on the history and age (though most museums won't discuss value unless they're interested in acquiring the piece in question.) Sorry I couldn't help more, and good luck!

Re: Antique Ballot Box
Thanks again. What I meant to say was he purchased items over 500 years old, not $500. I will take your advice and contact a museum.
