Re: Antique carved bone (1779-Colonel Rogers Clark)
Re: Antique carved bone (1779-Colonel Rogers Clark)
It *is* a very nice looking piece. Unfortunately, it's a reproduction with minimal resale value (that and a larger piece of synthetic scrimshaw recently sold for $20 on eBay). The New Bedford Whaling Museum has it described on their "Fakeshaw" page as:
192.
COLONEL ROGERS CLARK
Tooth, 4.5 inches (11.4 cm).
[Manufacturer not identified.]
Obverse: Bust portrait "Colonel Rogers Clark" in riband, "1779." Reverse: Flag, Union Jack quartered, 11 stripes; cannon and powder horn device; "1779."
So the downside is it's not an authentic piece of scrimshaw, but on the bright side, an old lady in Israel probably didn't help make whales endangered!
