Antique Carved Swan Arm Chair

By Sellers_World, 14 November, 2008
Description

I am selling a pair of chairs for a friend. PHOTOS BELOW. She originally purchased them from an antique shop, but the owner couldn't tell her anything about them --- only that they were "antiques".

The arms are carved swans and the legs are decorated with carved fans and bell shapes. The arms are two separate pieces, connecting at the curve with peg joints.

I have looked all over the internet for furniture with carvings like this one. I've found swan armed chairs, but they are large and complex carvings with the heads in an upright position, (instead of a reclining downward position).

My questions are: (1) How can I tell if this is an antique or a repro? (2) Does anyone know where they might have been made? (They have been reupholstered, and there aren't any identifying labels.)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Beth

Re: Antique Carved Swan Arm Chair

I have the same chairs!  Also antiques.  Did you ever get any information on them, their origin, or value?

Re: Antique Carved Swan Arm Chair

Somethings really need a physical appraisal to determine what you have, chairs like these have been reproduced since the 1890's. With these the underside of the chairs would have to be examined, the framework beneath tells the tale.

Re: Antique Carved Swan Arm Chair

I have the same chair with the original fabric and wood work needs to be refinished. Wondering if we should refinish it or leave it alone? Alos what sort of markings am I looking for as everything is covered on the bottom?

Thanks for any help,

mady
