Antique Wax Doll

By Anonymous (not verified), 10 April, 2008
Description

I do not know what is beneath the wax; but her head, shoulders, torso & arms below the elbow are all wax.  Her legs appear to be wooden? But I am not certian.  Her clothes are attached & not removable.  I cannot find any markings or makers anywhere on this doll.  She is approx 18" tall.  Her hair is very fine & rooted into the wax.  My guess would be actual human hair or mohair?  Her facial features are painted; except for her eyebrows & eyelashes - which are the same substance as her hair & also rooted in the wax.  A great attention to detail has been applied to this doll.  I am looking to find out everything I can about her, including a value.  Some of her fingers are broken & one is missing with a wire protruding from the wax where it used to be.

Thanks

History
I bought it at an Estate Sale - she appears to be fairly old. Her clothes are sewn on. Her body is clot and I think her legs are wooden but could be bisque? They are covered in "hose stockings" so I can't be sure. Her arms are wax also with wire inside from the elbow down.

Re: Antique Wax Doll

She is just beautiful. Wax dolls were unfortunately, unmarked most of the time. I do not know what age she is as I am no expert and as wax dolls were produced from 1700's all the way to the early 20th century, with the older ones abviously bringing in more value.

Though she is a common height, the fact that she is so well preserved makes her valuable. I am thinking maybe 400 to 700 dollars. This is my unprofessional opinion. Good luck.
