Black lacquer jewelry chest with pearl inlay

I've tried googling to gather more information.  It's similar to some 1950s black lacquer boxes I've seen online.  The descriptions are mixed--some claim to be Chinese or Korean, but they seem to feature cranes rather than the peacocks seen here.

I received this jewelry chest from my grandmother.  She's a bit of a horder, so she doesn't remember where or when she got it. 

Any information anyone can give on the chest would be greatly appreciated.
