Royal Winton "Esther" Chintz Breakfast Tea Set

Description:

This is a vintage Royal Winton Grimwades breakfast tea set, featuring the "Esther" chintz pattern. The set consists of:

  • Tea pot with lid
  • Tea cup
  • Milk jug (creamer)
  • Toast rack
  • Sugar bowl
  • Large serving tray (approx. 9 inches in diameter)

Each piece is marked with Royal Winton Grimwades, Made in England, confirming its authenticity as a product of the famous Grimwades pottery, known for producing highly collectible chintzware.

History & Background:

  • Royal Winton Grimwades was a prestigious English pottery manufacturer, renowned for its chintzware designs from the 1920s–1960s.
  • The "Esther" pattern was introduced in the mid-20th century, featuring floral motifs on a black background, accented with gold trim.
  • Chintzware is highly collectible due to its vibrant, intricate floral patterns and was primarily produced in England.

Condition:

  • Mint condition – No chips, cracks, or fading.
  • Gold trim appears intact, which greatly enhances value.
  • Complete set with tray, making it rarer and more desirable.

Estimated Market Value (2024):

Comparable Sales & Pricing Trends:

  • Individual pieces of Royal Winton chintz tea sets can range from $50–$200 per piece, depending on the item and condition.
  • Full breakfast sets in mint condition (with tray) typically sell for $300–$600+.
  • Rare patterns and well-preserved sets can reach $800+ at auctions or specialized antique dealers.

Estimated Value of This Set: $400–$600 USD
(Higher end if sold at auction or through a specialist dealer, lower end for general online marketplaces like eBay.)

Market Demand & Selling Considerations:

✔ Chintzware is highly collectible, especially in mint condition.
✔ Best platforms for selling:

  • eBay, Etsy (international buyers, especially from the UK, Australia, and Canada).
  • Specialist antique dealers who deal in English pottery and chintzware.
  • Live auction houses specializing in vintage ceramics.

Professional Appraisal Recommendation:

  • If you ever plan to insure or sell through an auction, a formal appraisal from an expert in English ceramics could further authenticate and increase value.
  • Since this set is in mint condition, it may fetch higher-end pricing in the right market.

Lovely bit of English Chintz…

Lovely bit of English Chintz, these breakfast sets were very desirable to collectors back in the 1980's when these sets could sell for over $1000.00, now they often go for under $250.00 at auction.
