Derby Silver Company Flask

By scottd, 8 November, 2008
Description

I need to know if Derby Silver Company was around in 1836 and if this is original. Or is it an added marking. The top of the flash removes and pulls up into a small cup, and collapses into a screw on cover. There is a floral decorative band about 2" high and towards the top of the flash. The flash is darkened with age and the silver plating is worn. If anyone has information on this piece, I would be greatful. I can provide pictures if requested.

Category

Medium
Quadruple Silver Plate
Distinguishing marks
"Derby Silver Co." "Quadruple Silver Plate" and "1836" are stamped on bottom and look to be aged as per piece
Condition
Good
Size and dimensions of this item
Approx. 5.5" high, 4" wide, and 1.5" thick
Date Period
1836 stamped on bottom. This appears questionable as Derby Silver Co. was founded in 1872???
History
My research tells me that Derby Silver Co. was founded in 1872, but this is stamped 1836. The stamping appears aged as the item and doesn't look added.

Re: Derby Silver Company Flask

1836 is not to be confused with a date. It represents either a pattern or design number and is quite common on silver items. Someone with a Derby catalog could trace that number and accurately date it.
