On American watches, unless there is a marking such as "10K", "14K", "18K" to indicate the gold content ,they are not gold. They are either plated or " Gold Filled", which is two very thin layers of gold either side of a base metal such as brass. The name on the dial is that of the Jeweller who sold it, this Retailer is known to have sold Elgin watches with his company name on the dial.
