George Zee & Co. Wooden Chest Made in China

By jmaclaren, 11 February, 2011
Description

I have a wooden chest with the label George Zee & Co. Art Carved Furniture Manufacturers 142 Nanking Rd. Eastern Shanghai Cable Address "Goergze" Made in China. I believe as a child I was told it was toe carved but do not know any other history. During my research of this item I see that many of his pieces were made in Hong Kong and this piece was made in China. It has no serial # on the label as it may be possible this was made before Mr. Zee moved his business to Hong Kong and began adding serial #'s to his work. If anyone knows any info on this piece Please contact me. Thank you so much.

History
I have a wooden chest with the label George Zee & Co. 142 Nanking Rd. Eastern Shanghai Cable Address "Georgze" Made in China The top of the chest is carved as well as the four sides. The top is carved with Gardens, men pushing people in rickshaws and a man on a horse with a sword dangling by his side. On one end of the chest it looks like people bowing before a shrine. It has original brass hinges and closure. I don't know the wood type as I don't know teak or Camphorwood. Does anyone know the difference? I know the chest was made before or possibly around 1946. I am interested in knowing more about this. I believe I was told as a child that this chest was toe carved but am not sure of the other history. Does anyone know value of this item. Many George Zee items listed have been made in Hong Kong this chest label reads Made in China. It has no serial # listed as it may be possible Mr. Zee made this before moving to Hong Kong and adding serial #'s to his labels. Please respond if you know any info about this item. Thank you so much.
