Description

"Hi everyone, Anthony joining the group! I'm a collector with a few years under my belt, focusing on decor, vintage, antiques, and ethnic/aboriginal items, along with a general admiration for all things art and culture. I'm excited to finally connect with fellow enthusiasts and hopefully get some help with a challenging identification.

I'm currently trying to pinpoint the exact date and style of this Mahogany Round Pedestal Drum Side Table. Based on my research, I'm leaning towards 1833, but I'm open to the possibility of 1933. Any insights or knowledge from those with more experience would be incredibly valuable.

History I had obtained this specific piece alongside several other pieces together I believe 8 or 9 in total I had obtained from a couple that have quite an extensive and impressive mixture of different collectibles. I had executed the summer season last year completing a construction job on their Estate and once we shared common admiration for collectables we they presented them and worked them into the pricing alongside the difference so it worked out for both of us so I couldn't tell you specific as they were all together, I would say roughly though will probably Incorporated it around 600 But then again it doesn't really carry any weight because it was in compensation for part of the actual cash tender so . 🔍 Summary

📌 Item Description

  • Type: Round Drum Side/End Table
  • Material: Solid Mahogany with Inset Leather Top
  • Features:
    • Single drawer with lion's head pull (a classic neoclassical motif)
    • Tripod pedestal base with cabriole legs and spade/claw feet
    • Hand-cut dovetail joinery (visible in drawer construction)
    • Lathe-turned center pedestal
    • Stamped underside with partially legible date code, possibly “NOV 29 1933”

📅 Dating & Style

While the style draws from early 19th-century Duncan Phyfe designs (notably the lyre and tripod motifs), the construction and joinery are consistent with early to mid-20th century reproductions, likely circa 1933, as indicated by the stamp and machine-cut elements.

  • Not original to 1833 — There are no period-correct construction indicators (e.g., square nails, hand-planing, or early glue blocks).
  • Machine-sawn lumber and the use of standardized screws confirm it is a well-made vintage reproduction from the 1930s Colonial Revival movement, which popularized Phyfe-style furniture again.

🏷️ Value Estimate (2025)

  • Retail/Dealer Price (Restored Condition): $300–$450
  • Private Party/Online Sale: $150–$275
  • Auction Estimate: $100–$200 (depending on local interest and condition)

Values can vary depending on location, marketing, and presentation. This piece is desirable for its style, proportions, and decorative quality.

Authentication Summary

  • Authentic Period Reproduction (Not original 19th century)
  • Likely American, 1930s, based on:
    • Date stamp (appears to read "NOV 29 1933")
    • Drawer dovetails and machine marks
    • Revival styling popular in the U.S. during that time

📷 Observations from Images

  • Leather top appears original and well-preserved, adding to value.
  • Drawer construction shows quality joinery (not mass-produced modern).
  • Underside construction with number stamps and batten support typical of 1930s furniture.
  • Mahogany veneer and finish are in good condition; minor wear visible.

🛠️ Recommendation

If you're considering selling or insuring this piece, a written appraisal from a licensed appraiser may be useful, especially if part of a larger collection. Otherwise, documenting it with this report should suffice for most resale platforms like Chairish, 1stDibs, or local vintage dealers.
