Pine wardrobe with mark on back

By Ronnie Wendt, 27 March, 2025
Description

Cabinet has vents in it on the back. It has a mark stamped on it that we cannot identify. The wood appears to be pine. It has lock on the doors, a small area with a door that appears to be for a "hat" maybe. It's in great condition. We just were wondering about the value. We paid $50.

Early To Mid-20th Century German Pine Wardrobe

Item Description:

Early to mid-20th century German pine wardrobe featuring paneled double doors, interior clothing bar, venting at the rear, and a small compartment likely used for hat or accessory storage. The wood appears to be solid pine, with natural grain and a warm, reddish finish.

Distinguishing Mark:

The mark stamped into the wood depicts an eagle atop a swastika inside a circle, flanked by the letters "R.A.D."—this stands for Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service), a Nazi-era labor organization operating in Germany from 1934 to 1945. This suggests that the wardrobe may have been:

  • Produced for or used in an official RAD facility (such as a barracks, office, or housing unit)
  • Crafted during the 1930s–40s under the Third Reich

Historical Significance:

Items bearing RAD or Nazi-era stamps are often categorized as militaria. Because this piece is furniture—not a weapon or uniform—it falls into a more niche subcategory. It may be of interest to military historians, collectors of WWII artifacts, or furniture historians focused on wartime manufacturing.

However, Nazi-era symbols can limit resale opportunities due to their controversial nature and restrictions on sales in some countries (e.g., Germany). That said, in the U.S., historical pieces like this may legally be sold, but often only through specialized militaria or antique channels.

Condition & Craftsmanship:

  • Good overall condition for its age; wear appears consistent with use
  • Minor oxidation on hinges; functional locking mechanism
  • Interior is intact and includes original features
  • Appears structurally sound

Estimated Value (U.S. market):

  • Collector/Militaria Value: $350–$600
  • General Antique Furniture Market: $150–$300
  • Auction Estimate (Specialty WWII Sale): Possibly up to $800 if tied to known RAD provenance or restored attractively

Recommendations:

  • Keep provenance intact (do not remove or alter the RAD mark)
  • For historical or resale interest, document with photos and measurements
  • If you're ever interested in reselling, consult a militaria appraiser or auction house like Hermann Historica, Alexander Historical Auctions, or Bonhams militaria departments
  • Avoid selling on mainstream platforms like eBay unless you blur or obscure Nazi insignia per their policy
