Pitcher - James W Tufts Silver Quadruplet Plate

By laurel.a.kowalczyk, 3 December, 2015
Description

On the bottom of the pitcher it has "James W Tufts  Quadruple Plate" in a circular stamp along the outside; "Boston Warranted" inside in a circular pattern; a four pointed design with a "T" in the center; and the number "2345" underneath the circle.

The handle is a half-heart shape.  It has a row of circles - roughly pin head sized dots - inset and running down each side of the handle.  The base is circular and about an inch wide.  It also has the same sized dots but they are arranged in sets of four and have an alternating line pattern seperating each set.  Additionally, there is a roping design where the base meets the bowl of the pitcher and where the base meets the table.  The base of the neck has a large band that runs entirely around it.  It is about 2 inches wide and is a larger version of the base.  It has top and bottom roping with a smooth circlet capping both.  Aside from being larger, this band has seven dots in a progressing size in alternating top to bottom pattern.  These sets of seven dots are also seperated by an alternating line pattern.  The dots are also around the mouth and pour spout of the pitcher.

Aside from the trim mentioned above, there are three different designs on the pitcher.  The first is on the back of the pour spout and appears to be like an "owl".  It has mirrored swirls which are the "eyes".  It has a dot centered above the swirls and a down pointing triangle also centered but below the eyes.  Beneath the centered triangle are elongated swirled triangles that radiate out from the center.  The entire design is about two inches long and of an overall oval shape.

The spout of the pitcher has an intricate design under it.  It appears to be the image of an angry bearded man, reminiscent of Posiedon.  It is embossed and surrounded  with scrolls and leafy background swirls.  The image is also in an oval shape and about 3.5 inches long.

The final image is an engraved floral design that covers about half the bowl of the pitcher.  The flowers appear to be similar in shape as to petunias or morning glories.  They have elongated triangle shaped leaves and many closed buds.  There are also stems with small tear-shaped leaves in the background.
