Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
Everything you have portrayed it to be is correct, there is little to add regarding origins. As to value, this piece has no design features that would command much if any premium over metal values. A very run of the mill piece for the era but thanks for sharing.
Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
A little more research pinpointed the maker and year. It was made by Charles Hougham in 1797 and is known as a taper/chamber stick. I would put a retail pricetag of probably thirty to forty percent over melt.
Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
How did you get the maker mark as CH? Its RS.. SO your telling me this 215 year old item is worth no more than 300.00!
Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
According to the hallmarks this piece was made in London in 1797 by Robert Swanson. What the other poster has mentioned about value is on the mark. While desirable, these are not rare pieces.
Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
Thank You Lovejoy, I know with my coins cleaning is out of the question. If I want to display this in the shop would it loose value it I cleaned and shined it up?
Re: Pre 1800 Sterling Candle Holder
The makers mark was stamped upside down.. Indeed it is RS and not SH as it appears, oops. Thanks for sharing
