QUEEN VICTORIA CHRISTMAS FAIRY LIGHT LAMP - COBALT BLUE - VERY RARE!!!

By spikedmort, 5 July, 2012
Description

Description: This is an excellent example of an antique Victorian Christmas lamp or also called a Fairy Lamp. This example is made from Blue or Colbolt colored glass. This lamp is a head form of the Queen of England, Queen Victoria.  It is a unique form of a portrait of Queen Victoria, with the front being a relief portrait of the Queen, and the back being stylized curls of hair.

These figurals are very hard to find and fall into the Very Rare catagory of glass collecting. The top opening has a ground finish with some small flea bites, and one small chip that can be seen in the photos. The edge of the opening directly over her face is very thin and when it was molded, did not fill the mold completely. This makes it look very rough, but its just the edge of the glass which was not ground down at the factory, since it would have made the lamp much shorter. The base is marked with embossing that reads: HEARN WRIGHT & Co MAKERS - LONDON around the edge and REGd. No. 293502 in the middle of the base. The base is slightly concaved and sits flat very nicely. This style of Christmas Lamp was designed to burn oil with a floating wick or a small candle. Around the 1890's these lamps were hung outside during the holidays to welcome friends, or hung on the Christmas tree indoors as decorations and lights. This style lamp with its flat base was designed to hang as well as sit on a flat surface when being displayed. This lamp has a top opening of about 2-3/8 inches and an overall height of 3-15/16 inches. The overall size of the lamp is larger around since the top opening is not the largest measurement.

Condition: This lamp is in excellent condition with the one tiny chip noted on the opening edge. This can be seen in the photos above. There are some small flea bites around the top opening also, but most likely made when the opening was ground at the factory.

Color : The Victorian Christmas Fairy Lamp is made from Blue or Colbolt colored glass.
