Skeleton Drawing

By yulianel, 18 March, 2025
Description

The full description of the drawing can be found in the second image.

The page is numbered 238 and 37. I think that everything that is written inside is in Latin.

I do not think this page was taken from the original manuscript.

More likely, it was copied in order to be of help to practicing doctors.

Early 15th Century Skeleton Drawing (Latin Manuscript Copy)

Item Description:
This framed anatomical drawing is labeled as a reproduction from an early 15th-century Latin manuscript, with origins linked to the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. The text appears to be in Latin and represents an anatomical diagram, likely copied to assist practicing doctors. The item shows characteristics consistent with educational or scientific study materials from the period when anatomical exploration was being rediscovered in medieval Europe.

Historical Context:

  • Time Period: The early 15th century marked a period of renewed interest in medical knowledge, particularly in Europe. Anatomy was advancing after a long period of stagnation, with limited dissection practices emerging following the fall of Alexandria’s medical dominance. Manuscripts like this one often blend observation with traditional beliefs, making them unique records of the period's medical thought.
  • Manuscript Style: The detailed skeletal structure with labeled parts aligns with medieval anatomical diagrams that focused on educating physicians. The style resembles instructional materials created during the revival of anatomy studies in places like the School of Bologna.

Condition:

  • Paper Condition: Fair, with visible aging stains and some ink fading.
  • Frame: Well-preserved frame that protects the document while complementing its historical nature.
  • Integrity: The reproduction appears to be intact, with the text legible and content clear.

Value and Collectibility:

  • Value Range (Estimate): $200 - $600 USD
    • Factors Affecting Value:
      • Authenticity: If verified as a genuine copy made for educational or medical reference in the period, the value could be higher.
      • Condition: Signs of aging contribute to authenticity but may limit the market appeal if severe.
      • Provenance: The attached label indicating Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris lends some credibility; however, confirming this origin would enhance the appraisal's precision.
  • Interest Group: Collectors of medical history, medieval manuscripts, and rare book enthusiasts would find this particularly desirable.

Recommendations:

  • Professional Appraisal: Consider consulting a manuscript or rare book specialist to confirm if this is an authentic period copy or a later reproduction. An expert could further assess the ink, paper type, and writing style for authentication.
  • Conservation: To preserve the item’s condition, maintaining it in a controlled environment with UV-protected glass would prevent further deterioration.
  • Research Potential: Since this document may have links to significant early medical texts, investigating potential ties to well-known anatomical treatises (like "Mansur's Anatomy") could significantly raise its value.

Conclusion:

This framed anatomical illustration has value as a historical artifact, particularly for those interested in early medical science. Depending on its confirmed origins and condition, its worth could vary widely. Consulting an expert in medieval manuscripts is strongly advised for a precise valuation.
